Reliance Jio became the top bidder to the airwaves capable of offering speed about 10 times faster than 4G, lag-free connectivity and can enable billions of connected devices to share data in real time.
“Now, with a bigger ambition and stronger resolve, Jio is all set to lead India’s march into the 5G era.”
5G availability in India will not just be a point of conversation, but also soon be a part of reality. On 26th July, four companies- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Adani Data Networks took part in the bidding for the 72 GHz of radiowaves in the 5G spectrum auction. The bidding process began at 10 AM and went on till 6 pm. The spectrum in 700 MHz was sold for the first time in 2022 and a record over Rs. 1.5 trillion worth of 5G telecom spectrum was sold in a seven-day auction, which saw billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio emerging as the top bidder to consolidate its leadership position. It acquired spectrum in the 700MHz, 800MHz, 1800MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands amounting to ₹88,078 crore, followed by Bharti Airtel at Rs 43,084 crore.
The payments for auctioned spectrum can be fulfilled in 20 equal annual installments, each to be paid at the beginning of each year. The bidders would also have the choice of surrendering the spectrum after 10 years, with no future liabilities with regard to leftover installments.
The acquisition of this range of spectrums will enable Jio to build the World’s most advanced 5G network and further strengthen India’s global leadership in wireless broadband connectivity. Further, the company's 5G network will enable the next generation of digital solutions that will accelerate India’s AI-driven march towards becoming a over $5 trillion economy.
In addition to power ultra-low latency connections which allow downloading full-length high-quality video or movies to mobile device in a matter of seconds, Fifth generation would enable solutions such as e-health, connected vehicle, more-immersive augmented reality and metaverse experiences, life saving use cases and advance mobile cloud gaming among others.
